Religion and Politics

Ms. Serrato has some interesting questions about the politics surrounding a long standing religious conflict in Ireland.  I really like her questions.  She is asking for your opinion but, how well will you be able to back up your opinion with facts and sound reasoning?  But first, let's see what she has to say.

1. Why is it that Catholics and Protestants are so deeply divided in Ireland?
2. Do you think Northern Ireland will continue to have conflicts between Catholics an Protestants?
3. How will Brexit impact Northern Ireland?

  1. 1. The reason for the division of Catholics and Protestant in Ireland is due to history. Catholicism in Ireland has been around long before the military conquest of the island by Protestant Anglo and Scottish forces of Great Britain. Add religious sentiment and favoritism into the mix, and you have discrimination based on religion, the IRA insurrection in Northern Ireland, The Troubles and Bloody Sunday.
    2. Nothern Ireland will still have conflicts between Catholics and Protestants. Just decades after a violent period, there is still tension between the two groups. Politics is the main igniter for conflict, as Catholic and Protestant nationalist banter over the future of Northern Ireland. Much like how in the US between Democrats and Republicans, except with religious sentiment and a long bloody history.
    3. Brexit will be another disagreement between Catholics and Protestants. Irish Catholics side with staying in the EU, whilst Protestants side with the decision of England leaving the EU.
